Coral Reef Workshop

Where: University of Guam Marine Laboratory, Mangilao, Guam

What: This five day professional development workshop for teachers, sponsored by the Inventory and Monitoring, Pacific Island Network, National Park Service, focuses on the science, research and cultural aspects of coral reefs and their susceptibility to climate change. The content of the workshop will follow the National Park Service educational module on Coral Reefs and Climate change. Each day participants will learn about coral reef structure and function and the science currently being conducted on coral reefs. Classroom activities that bring alive the various aspects of coral reefs will be presented along with Pacific Islands place-based cultural history of humans and coral reefs. The interactive, hands-on, science based activities are linked to the National Science Education Standards. Participants will explore coral reef habitats and conduct studies of the various types of corals and other organisms associated with the reef.

Who: Teachers from Guam and surrounding islands: all grade levels.

Stipend: $500 + some travel
